abstract = {In recent years, technologies such as Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) have become more popular and available to broader audiences, leading to the research and development of a myriad of extended applications. A modality for end-users to interact with these applications is through hand gestures, hence the importance of detecting the different gestures in real-time. This paper presents an interval type-2 Fuzzy Rule-based System (FRBS) optimised by the Big Bang-Big Crunch (BB-BC) algorithm that uses the fingers’ position from the hand-tracking technology in extended reality (XR) headsets (namely HoloLens 2 and Oculus Quest 2) to classify the user’s hand gestures. This approach achieved an accuracy of 96.4%, and it is an interpretable model that can be understood and adjusted by end-users. The interval type-2 FRBS was tested against a type-1 FRBS and a k-nearest neighbours (KNN) model. It outperformed the type-1 FRBS and was close to the 98.9% accuracy performance of the KNN model, making our suggested approach a competitive alternative to opaque models.},

abstract = {Building Information Modelling (BIM) is a standard digital process that fuses buildings information from different sources into a 3D model during their lifecycle. For new construction sites using BIM, it is possible to monitor the cost, schedule, and changes throughout the lifecycle; however, existing buildings do not have a BIM model. Manually creating the BIM models for existing buildings is a high-cost task, both in time and money, hence there is a need for extracting information from available paper-based documentation and fuse it into a BIM model. The struggle of facility management and utility companies to fully adopt a BIM process (due to their high volumes of paper-based documentation of existing buildings) has led to the research on creating these 3D BIM models from 2D floor plan images. This paper presents a novel processing pipeline to extract 2D digital information from floorplans, fusing it into a 3D BIM model. The work focuses on fusing the available information to create the structure of the building in BIM format, which is considered the essential step before looking on working with other sources of data. In this process, we introduce a type-2 fuzzy logic based Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) approach for the semantic segmentation step. The approach consists of using the outputs of type-2 fuzzy logic systems to classify a pixel as wall or background, by using information around and from the pixel of interest as the inputs to the system. After the semantic segmentation step, the output of the type-2 fuzzy logic goes through a noise removal process and finally a transformation from 2D to 3D by assigning the corresponding BIM tag to each identified element. The proposed type-2 fuzzy logic semantic segmentation approach produced comparable results (97.3% mean Intersection over Union (IoU) performance metric value) to the opaque box model approach based on Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) (99.3% mean IoU performance metric value). However, the type-2 fuzzy XAI system benefits from being an augmentable and interpretable model, which means that human users can understand the decision process and modify the model using their expert knowledge.},

abstract = {Modern cities are intrinsically multidisciplinary and multicultural places. Inspired by that view, this chapter has invited a cross-disciplinary international team of domain experts to present their differing views (in their distinctive styles) on the current state and future evolution of smart cities. In presenting their views, the experts have adopted the metaphor of a journey, since the people, organizations, and technologies comprising a smart city can be regarded as being on journeys from conception to death, from start-up to bankruptcy, and from innovation to obsolescence. To do this, the chapter begins with a person-centric exploration of smart cities, examining topics such as innovation, entrepreneurship, generational issues, memory, and education before ending with a set of discussions around the key enabling technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, smart transport, mixed reality, and wearables. The chapter concludes by regarding the smart city as a type living laboratory for innovative technology development, reflecting on the expert's opinions for potential directions of travel that smart city research might take.},

abstract = {Virtual Reality (VR) is a powerful tool for situate users in environments difficult to replicate in real life due to restricted access (e.g. historical sites or restricted buildings) or dangerous situations (e.g. working on top of a pole) among other examples. Such simulations can be used for allowing users to experience real-life situations in a controlled environment, enabling the study of interesting phenomena, such as user's engagement. This paper introduces a work-in-progress mobile VR app that recreates everyday working scenarios, using a mixture of 3D modelled environments and media streamed resources (e.g. 360 videos) to attract talent for specific roles in a company, by providing a better understanding of the activities involved in those roles. We complement this with preliminary results of a user evaluation, and the results of an engagement evaluation provided via a fuzzy logic system (FLS). Index},

abstract = {The increasing complexity of field service operations in different industries, presents companies with the challenge of maintaining and improving their workforce expertise. Employees need to be efficiently trained in different key specialized equipment and procedures. To do so, companies need to consider challenges such as access to equipment (or physical mock-ups) and the challenging logistics of getting people to them, among other issues. In this paper, we present a work-in-progress web-based VR simulator that aims to enhance and facilitate the hands-on training process for field service telecommunication engineers. We present an implementation of the simulator and report preliminary results of user evaluation.},

abstract = {Planning of infrastructure's provision and maintenance tasks is commonly done in a planning office using paper maps and desktop applications. However, any infrastructure plan has to be verified on location before being submitted to the responsible authorities. This task is usually accomplished by taking paper maps to the field and annotating them on site, or in the best case, using two-dimensional (2D) maps on mobile devices. Augmented reality (AR) can provide enhanced experiences of real-world situations by overlaying key information and three-dimensional (3D) visualizations when needed, thus supporting decision-making processes. AR could support land surveyors and mobile planners with a graphical overlay of the planned changes, highlighting relevant information and assets in their field of view. This paper presents an AR application, which uses interval type-2 fuzzy logic mechanisms to visualise immersive 3D georeferenced data; supporting planning and designing of infrastructure by directly modifying data to incorporate required changes, without the need of any post- processing. Immersive visual feedback is provided via a head mounted display (HMD), enhancing user's 3D spatial perception of georeferenced data.},

abstract = {Technological innovation is changing every aspect of our lives and extending into education, where it is introducing profound changes to both the traditional classroom and online learning environments. This chapter explores the future of MUVEs, focusing particularly on immersive mixed reality learning environments and the challenges involved in the shift to multidimensional environments in education. It reviews the earlier developments in MUVEs and identifies a barrier to their deployment in science and engineering education: their inability to support physical collaborative laboratory work. The chapter then explains how advances in mixed-reality research may offer a solution to this problem through a case study of a cutting-edge example of such an approach, the BReal Lab, together with a summary of evaluation results gained from a trial involving students in 5 different countries. Finally, the chapter concludes by reflecting on the issues raised and speculates on possible future directions that work on mixed-reality MUVEs might take.},

abstract = {3-D virtual worlds and other immersive environments offer features that other learning systems cannot easily replicate. As such, they have the potential to revolutionise the way in which people learn. They are well suited to visualise 3-D objects and their relations to explain complex phenomena. In addition, they enable practical experiments to be performed that are difficult to conduct in the real world. They can also help to facilitate collaborative learning in real-time and enable students to become fully engaged in what they are doing. However, these environments require further exploration to improve their learning affordances. For instance, assessing students' performance and collecting learning evidence is still in its early stages. This paper is primarily devoted to furthering our understanding of observation and assessment. In so doing, a virtual observation model has been developed to effectively map classroom-based observations with how people can be evaluated in virtual 3-D environments. The observation model has been applied to a multi-user virtual environment (MUVE) and examples that illustrate its potential effectiveness are provided. In essence, our research aims to support and enhance the learning experience by demonstrating the advantages of 3-D virtual worlds as a means for advancing learning processes.},

abstract = {textcopyright 2017 IEEE. This paper presents a type-2 Fuzzy Logic System (FLS) to support technical employees in finding company's assets in outdoor settings. The system provides the user with directions for asset location by comparing his/her current position with assets' location in real-time, giving auditory and visual feedback via a Head Mounted Display (HMD). We carried out 35 path explorations in a predefined area to test the system. The results indicated that the proposed type-2 fuzzy logic produces better performance than the type-1 based fuzzy system, giving more precise indications to reach asset's position.},

abstract = {textcopyright 2017 IEEE. In recent years, Augmented Reality (AR) started transitioning from an experimental technology to a more mature area, with new types of applications in entertainment, marketing, education, retail, transportation, manufacturing, construction, and other industries. One of the main challenges for AR-based field service tools is to help users to correctly locate company's assets and infrastructure in the field. This paper presents an AR system using private maps to find company's assets to support field workforce tasks. The AR system is based on fuzzy logic mechanisms to provide the user with directions for asset location by comparing his/her current position with assets' location in real-time. Auditory and visual feedback is provided via a head mounted display (HMD), enhancing user's perception to achieve human augmentation.},

abstract = {textcopyright Springer International Publishing AG 2017. Immersive environments such as 3-D virtual worlds have shown great potential for learning since they have many features that distinguish them from other learning systems. They support explaining difficult phenomena by visualising objects and their relationships. Additionally, they enable collaborative learning by connecting students in real-time and increase engagement and exploration between them. However, assessing learning outcomes in these environments involves many challenges such as dynamically capturing and analysing the actions of users and translating these actions into learning evidence. This paper focusses on significant aspects of the learning process: observation and assessment. It presents a virtual observation model that maps observing learners in classrooms with observing and assessing students in 3-D virtual environments. In addition, it demonstrates the implementation of the observation model and provides examples of its application. In general, the paper aims to enhance the learning affordances of the 3-D virtual worlds by recording all in-world learning evidence and visualising students' assessments to improve learning.},

abstract = {The recent years have witnessed an increase in the use of augmented and virtual reality systems, changing the way we interact with our environments. Such systems are commonly associated with advertising, entertainment, medicine, training and education. However, with the increasing acceptance and availability of mobile and wearable devices (e.g. head-mounted displays (HMD)), the use of these technologies is moving towards professional and industrial environments, where they would be able to support employees in their daily tasks, increasing customer satisfaction and reducing business costs. This paper presents an innovative Mixed Reality (MR) system to assist field workforce in remote locations. As part of the overall implementation, the MR system uses fuzzy logic mechanisms to improve accuracy in user tracking and object monitoring, allowing the correct representation of users and objects in the Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs), and improving the experience for users.},
